How do you make 2021 the year that you actually stick to your resolutions? Let’s be honest, most of us have broken them by the 2nd January if not sooner.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. ”
The first thing is to really understand why you have set the resolutions in the first place. If your starting point is aligned with your values then it will make all the difference in achieving your goals. When all the actions that you have to put in place have a purpose it makes it so much easier to do them whether that is putting on your running shoes, putting away the cigarettes or home cooking real whole foods.
Ask yourself “What value is driving you to be healthy in 2021?”
If Family is one of your core values then you may want to be fitter to run around in the park with your children. If you are driven by success then having more energy and clarity of thought at work may be your key motivator.
Once you know your values then you need to decide what goals you actually want to set yourself.
Ask yourself “I know I am successful when…”
Make them Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Time-bound goals. As we know if something is measurable then it is manageable.
Now write your goals on a piece of paper and stick them up somewhere you can see them every day as a constant reminder.
Next what 3 bad habits can you reduce, or even better stop doing, to help you achieve your goal?
What 3 healthy habits can you start doing today to help you achieve your goal?
Sounds easy in theory but not reality… My final tip is to pick your support team. Surround yourself with people who will cheer you on and be there to see you cross the finish line of success. Whether that is your partner, friends or colleagues it will make it significantly easier to achieve long-lasting change when you are being supported on your journey.
